now that a good portion of participants in CBML4 possess their discs, i think it's a good time to begin prodding you all to send at least ONE COPY each to a webzine/magazine/radio station for potential review/airplay.if everyone involved sends just one disc to a media outlet of some kind, we will reach some fairly impressive exposure (at least 40 outlets).to avoid sending more than one disc to the same place, i think we need to assign/choose where each person sends a disc. please indicate where you'll send yours here in this thread.i choose AMG because i've done it before successfully and because they are only a few hundred miles away from chicago. which reminds me: save money by shipping locally and exploit your local music resources.now....let's go!

I think Goodiepal's going for a few of the London/international leftfield music mags in the near future; I'll try and get some details from him. Best idea's probably to post here where you intend to ship stuff so, so nothing's duplicated.

FYI, I'm not sending any promos out until I've sent out all the participants' discs.

Sorry, this is a kind of thread-hijack, but it's sort of relevant.

I was just having a look at the advertising rates for The Wire mag:

http://www.thewire.co.uk/about/advertising.html

A full page ad costs between ?95-1600, which is obviously obscene, but a smaller one can cost as little as ?0. However, a good sized (quarter-page) black and white ad would cost ?00 according to that page. My idea - what if a group of us were to put a few quid into a pot (which I could manage, I don't mind) and raise enough money to put an advert for CBML4 or DigiVom in general in a mag like The Wire? In such a humourless mag like that, having a really good DigiVom ad would definetely make it stand out from all the deadly serious ads for Important Records or Locust Music and the like, and could therefore do the "label" a huge favour in terms of promotion. I dunno, maybe some people wouldn't feel comfortable either paying for an advert, and an advert in a mag like The Wire, but I reckon the idea could certainly be twisted into something very helpful, if it's not in it's present state.

can't say i've got any money for such an idea, but it could be fun if done right.

...and by "right" i mean seriously, seriously wrong. an advertisement that completely takes the piss out of advertisments, the wire, record labels and everything.

not sure how this could be done, but we've got some clever bastards lurking hereabouts.

What do you need for the press kit? I'm happy to write some blurb, if someone wants to slap it into some shape with formatting, sticking the logo on the top, adding a cover shot(?) etc.

How's this for a start?

Press release

I think it could do with adding the logo somewhere, adding the CBML4 cover art maybe...

Also, not sure who the press contact should be? Perhaps add your own name when you send it out, if you're happy to talk to people (only need to add an email addy really). Else we need to work out who should be our press spokesperson.

Was wondering whether to add a list of artists involved in Digital Vomit, but the list became way too long, and didn't really want to judge who's on and who's off (plus god only knows how many people there really when it comes to which pseudonym goes with which... wait hang on, some of that's inside CBML4 at least... maybe it can be done?)

Thoughts, amendments, etc. feel free to make them yourself, or give me suggestions and I'll have a go a rewriting it.

One final thing, if we get people linking to digitalvomit.com (as is the central portal for it all), can we take down the splashpage please? It's kinda sick-making, and looks a little MS Paint (as it is), whereas we're supposed to be professionals, right? :P Actually I like the flashing logo, it's just the background that's a bit crap

I sent CBML4 and Dry Heaves to Some Assembly Required and brainwashed.com.  The latter suggested browsing the "About Us" section and putting it to the attention of someone specific.  Several people could have worked, but I opted for Creaig Dunton because he's a fellow DIY experimental/noise warrior.

Dropped into the Brick Lane Rough Trade shop today, and was well pleased with seeing CBML4 in there - there are four or five copies, right at the front of the rack, right at eye level, in their own little section... man, that's only one step from getting filed under a "Digital Vomit" divider... If we wanna aim for something with all this, it should be to get our own divider (: The point is, it's right there in the shop, ready to go, we (UK and Londoners) need to think of a "big bang" promotional stunt I reckon... Any ideas? Something KLFy could be good, and perhaps it is time to think about that advert in the Wire?

take it from somebody that knows, advertising the wire is a complete waste of time.
goodiepal has done it a few times and had no response to any of the full page adverts he put in there.
of course this did not deter him as he did what he wanted to do and had at the time the money to do that.
for a label such as this label however it would be a complete waste of resources.
as for rough trade is it still overpriced in there ???
i stopped giving them v/vm releases as i was dismayed by their overpricing of releases due to their limited nature.
also they said i could be album of the week in there a few years back if i paid them (then i would be on listening posts in the shop) =- to me it's a bad attitude. i mean it's good they are still there as a physical shop but bad that money as ever talks.

personally you would be better targetting online mail orders who specialise and can reach people who would be interested. i mean as a mailorder i sell a lot of records and cd's despite no promotion (certainly more than the people around me sell), maybe it is because i give away also - i don't know. but i mean i still didn't hear this release and yet you sent it to ad nauseum who for sure will list it but probably won't sell too many as it's not really what they do - i am sure i could sell more than they do for instance. i still have never listed disc 3 because i have been out of england for 14 months -- so my own lack of online support is mainly based around not hearing the discs.

target good online blogs who review and upload releases, these are your loss leaders. sure people will trade audio for nothing, but you cannot be bothered by this. for every 100 people who get exposed to the release, maybe 1 will purchase. but the music at least gets out there.

really i also think the compliations would benifit from audio given away for free taken from the discs. you have mitch who is happy to host files, so the website for me should be made more dynamic and audio should be given away. certainly all of the out of print releases should be given away for free now. there is nothing to stop this happening. it will help the project out in the long run to be open.

also why is there no mailorder on the website ?? it's best to sell directly to your audience, cut out the rough trade's and get cash back directly into the project - i mean if i am being honest and i found out about this and came to the website and thought great "where do i buy this?" and was redirected to rough trade or somewhere else i personally wouldn't make a purchase. i would want to deal direct. it's something you should all think about.

for example if every artist had of donated 5 of their free copies into a label stash then a mailorder with these copies could be set up with cash received (minus the postage of course) going into new releases, both physical and non physical. maybe even covering half the manufacturing costs of new projects. setting up a mailorder with paypal is painless enough so is essential for the growth of any label. too many labels still don't see this and rely on shops who usually will make more than the label for any sales they get.

it's just an idea/

auiences are changing, the way we consume music is changing, KLF style stunts would not work now as they did for Bill and Jimmy back in the day because too many people want music for nothing and there is now too much out there that being noticed at all is an amazing feat. for example even today i found two new blogs randomly and there are around 400 experimantal albums on one which have been uploaded in the last 6 weeks !!!! now this is what you are up against these days... everything is out there,,,

several extremely valid points made here ---

1) why hasn't anyone in UK/europe sent discs to mr. kirby? he has always been a great promoter for us, as well as being a good friend.

2) why on earth aren't we selling discs directly from our website?

3) we should definitely post cbml3 as an audio download now.

Very good points. Basically we're disorganised (by design), so it's always difficult if not impossible to know what's going over DigiVom as a whole re: who's got discs, who hasn't, who'd be responsible for mail order via the site, who's making the money from the CDs in Rough Trade etc. Who knows how we'd make this work?

5 copies are now proudly being displayed upon the counter of my local Replay. They paid me ?5 and i said they could flog em for whatever they want, i shall return later to see what that price is....

I shan't bother with 'Mixing It' as it doesn't exist anymore. (duh)

I could send one to 'Future Music' magazine...they have given me decent reviews in the past but this is for amateur demos. Lets see what happens.

thanks for the feedback , because i was not having a go at anyone - just trying to improve things for you all.
i mean selling direct would improve things as far as i see it. adverts are probably the wrong way to go.

it's tough times out there for labels. these releases on digital vomit are good in the sense that no-one loses out cash wise like for example i would if i make something as there's a larger outlay and risk involved.

you invest and then either sell or give away your copies. the only downside it that only those in the know often get to find out about these releases and it's a closed circle. also i have noticed people scoff at releases as if they are somehow not real because everyone funds them and it's not on what would be classed as a real label.

press to be honest is changing, it's becoming less and less important as more and more people trust their own ears online now. and will find what they like. you just have to make sure that it's available for them to find. so traditional reviews carry less weight.

it is good of course you get on the rough trade website but you need to understand that often people will go to websites such as rough trade and smallfish etc. read the reviews but will not purcahse from these places preferring to deal direct with labels because it costs less and they know more cash goes back into the labels.

the CBML series has a lot of positives because not everyone on the discs are unknown. so there are good angles to pull people into the site. with some TLC the site could be improved to increase traffic to the site.

Small biogs about the artists, more info about the concept of the series and how this has developed.

sure it's work, but if delegated would only have postive impacts on the overall project.

everyone should contribute to the upgrade.

anyway i have to run now, i will be back.....

i think some outside input from an experienced person like mr.vvm here is just what we needed. i agree with everything you say. and obviously there will be problems and some amount of effort to fix the things you mentioned. but like you said, it really would be worth it.

mail orders would be one of the essential things we need to get on top of.........the whole 'get in touch with this person if you want one' thing is ok, but it probably seems unproffesional to someone who has never heard of us before. the only question is, who would be in charge of the mail orders?

i think small blogs about each of the separate artists involved in any of the projects is a very good idea. it wouldn't be hard either because everyone could write their own..........im not sure if anyone else does this, but i actually enjoy going to sites of certain labels and reading the artist blogs.........there must be other people out there who do the same.

none of what vvm suggested is too dramatic a change, but it would make a big difference.
