Dear god, there's a lifetime's worth of stuff to try and see in London...

If you wanted to take in some of the big sights though, what I recommend would be:

Start at the Tower of London (Tower Hill tube station), have a look round. Also by the tower there is the remains of the London Wall, part of the wall around the ancient original London. (Hence the fact that part of London is called "The City of London", because it's what was once the real city, with Westminster etc. actually being neighbouring towns).

Cross south over the river when you're done, and you get to cross via Tower Bridge. Many tourists seem to think that the stone-clad Tower Bridge is somehow as old as the 1000 year old Tower of London. Which doesn't make a lot of sense, because it's made out of cast-iron girders and raises and lower pneumatically. It's a Victorian folly, basically.

Then walk west along the river, and you get to take in the futuristic Mayor's office, HMS Belfast, some office buildings, and London Bridge. London Bridge might look fairly unremarkable, but it's actually the oldest river crossing in London, with a bridge here for around 2000 years, and a very interesting history (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_bridge).

Continuing along the south bank of the Thames, you get to see historic Borough Market (food), Southwark Cathedral (free to look round I think), a recreation of the Golden Hinde (Frances Drake's tudor galleon, actually tiny), the ruins of a medieval great hall, the Clink prison museum, the recreated Globe Theatre, the fantastic Tate Modern, and the millennium footbridge. All within a twenty minute walk.

I'd highly recommend a look round the Tate, then after that you can either cross the footbridge to Saint Pauls, or carry along west along the Thames south bank, where you can walk through the modernistic concrete South Bank complex (with the National Film Theatre, The Hayward Gallery etc), and then onto the Millennium Wheel (or London Eye as it's otherwise known).

Depending on how many things you stopped to look at, you could do this whole walk in about two hours. Though if you like art I'd set aside a good hour or so to go round the Tate on it's own.

Oh, so that's why they call jail "the clink"! I always thought it was onomatopoeic.

thanks for the suggestions!

one thing, though --- is the Eye just like a glorified $30 ferris wheel? or is it really cool?

the tate musueum --- modern art? ....the thing about museums is this: i absolutely love them, but have been to SOOO many (i live in one of the great cities for museums), plus i've been to the major museums in NY, los angeles, san francisco, washington DC, so --- is this one a real stand-out?

not sure of your stance on such matters, but london and the UK in general is where you should definitely intoxicate yourself with MDMA at a party with some friends.

if it's not fun there, then you probably have a high gene count or some shit.

tate modern is pretty good. british museum is good too to see stolen treasures. if you get a chance to get to brighton and hang out, then i'd recommend that - nice down there. Not sure if you know the adverse camber dudes, but they are really nice and have always looked after me really well. Mike Kracked is also a really good bloke. Go for a ferry cruise on the river. it's fun and not too pricey,

Public transport in the UK is terrible. never assume that your bus or train will be on time, and if it's important, leave at least an hour early.

although beer is not cheap, it ends up being cheaper to sit in a pub all day than to catch public transport somewhere, because that is way over-priced and inefficient.

night busses are pretty good though. always buy one of those one-day bus passes.

did i mention getting crystal MDMA and licking it off foil? of course it's cheesy as fuck, and the whole world is suddenly wonderful for a while, but it is super fun.

Tate Modern's definitely worth sticking your head into, just to see the massive space inside (it used to be an old power station).

In terms of museums, there's a whole load of good ones - The British Museum (ancient history), Science Museum, Imperial War Museum, Natural History Museum, Museum of London, The V&A, etc.
