By my estimation I've has a mobile since you were about 9 or 10.
I've generally written my nown ring tones and found some things work and other don't.
my current tone is piercing and cut through anything (needed to hear over music or obvious reasons) - i'll record it and upload it sometime.
(a set of DV ringtone is a nice idea James.)

I think this is an awesome idea, especially if it also came on CD, with each ringtone just repeating and repeating for five minutes or so...

i have uploaded my first ringtone to myspace (www.myspace.com/solypsispulver).
it is downloadable and encoded at a bitrate sufficient for ringtone usage.
...and, if Rank Sintatra allows, i would like to steal his phrase "mobile phone up your arse" as the name of this potential comp.
(he sent me stickers a while back with this slogan emblazened on them)

Funnily enough I got a new phone last week and thought of a similar idea... (FYI, I've currently got Passenger Of Shit's "Wank My Farting Fanny Vomit" as my ringtone. As you do.)
Rather than releasing a straight compilation though, I could see this working as an ongoing project, in a similar vein to the sample bank thing or even Gaeoudjiparl's current "adaptive" works. Start off with a collection of 10 or so ringtones, each complying to a set of rules about length and bitrate (0:30/1:00, 64/128kbps?), then leave it open to expansion over time. Such a series could even have it's own code seperate from the DVRs - for instance DVRT001 for the first ringtone, DVRT002 for the second and so on.
Speaking of Rank... he's done a few ringtones in the past I believe. Might be worth asking for advice from him, if deemed necessary.

yeah, i don't see any valid reason why this should be a release in the traditional sense, just a collection that (hopefully) grows over time. it's really easy and fun to make 30 sec/1minute tracks that incorporate the ringtone theme in some sense. plus, the short length and the low bitrate makes storing them easy (on DV.com or whatever).
OK --- so enough people have expressed the opinion that this idea does not suck. therefore --- get ringtone-making!! stat!
it would be quite cool if this ringtone bank could bleed into unforeseen places....cell phone forums, etc.
we need to continue subverting/redefining what music distrubution is, so hopefully this might spur some somewhat "outside of the box" type thinking (not that this idea is particularly revelatory...
lastly....voice mail/answering machine tracks could be explored as well...i dunno.

oh ---- and it might be helpful for the uninitiated to know about the methods for uploading ringtones --- anybody know any reputable websites for this? i found one called "funformobile.com" but i don't know if they're one of those typical scammer fucks that'll demand payment or spam the hell out of you or call you all the time...
so yeah, the gist is you upload a low bitrate file to a service, they text you a link and then you download it to your phone. if anybody knows a better way, please do tell.

generally, it seems that most services request 64 to 128 kbps (and cell phone speakers wouldn't do justice to high bitrate tones anyways) so i'm requesting that the tones reside within those parameters and be less than 1 minute in length.

there has been a simular discussion about this on the snuggles mailing list in the past as well. specifically to so with a follow up project to the droplift project.

I've had a go at ringtones in the past - so i'll give this a go as well when i get the chance.
From previous experience i'd say nothing over 128k is worth bothering with as phone speakers aren't good enough (well, mine isn't anyway) to justify the memory space, and roll all the bass off cos you'll just lose it anyway. High-pitch noises work much better...

i just got my first ringtone in from Lisbent and it's appropriately obnoxious ----- now let's have more!
i made another one that is one my myspace....it's me yelling "RING! RING! RING! RING!" and is fucking annoying as hell.
...also --- whoever updates the digivom site: can you set up a page for this and may i start sending files to you? thanks.

Lisbent sent another ringtone, this one is even better and funnier....very nice.
the possibilities are endless...and, again, this stuff is quick and easy and there really isn't any pressure to create "art" or any such bullshit. just have fun.

fuck.....all my phone has is a crappy connection to one website which takes ages and costs a fortune for some crappy ringtone.

no, what you do is upload the tone to a server (type "upload ringtones" into google) and then they send you a text message with a link in it....then you connect to that link with your phone and download the encoded tone.
the only catch is you need internet service on your phone (ironically, i don't have internet service at the moment, so i can't even use these tones).
there may be other methods, though --- please share if you know.

I'm no expert on this, seeing as I've had the same phone for five years now (monophonic bleeps only for me), but can't you attach a data cable between phone and PC and do it like that? Depending on phone model... Also my old Nokia has an infra-red pick-up that can transmit data, and my laptop had a (pretty much entirely overlooked) infra-red transmitter. Might be worth checking if you can do either of these things to get the ringtones on your phone?

My phone connects via the USB port - i think most of the modern ones should do that these days, you shouldn't need to piss about with bluetooth.

My phone is so basic it can't play polyphonic ring tones.
with the wife phone we just put mp3 in right folder. our morning alarm sound is a doormouse track.
mY 2 ring tones (recorded off my phone) are on way.
