i know everyone probably gets this, but my first gig is less then a week away now and im starting to feel a deep sense of panic building up in me. when i was a kid i used to get quite bad panic attacks and im afraid that while im playing it will happen again. i've never played a gig of any kind before. i have no idea how my stuff will go down at this gig. most of the people going will have no idea who i am and (probably) be expecting breakcore or something. im also very afraid that to calm my nerves before the gig....i'll over indulge in alcoholic beverages (i suppose i am irish) and completely forget what i was supposed to be doing. PANIC!!!!

I have GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) and panic disorder, and while I haven't yet performed live as Junkshop Coyote, I have been in rock bands, did the solo-acoustic thing for awhile (I wouldn't call it folk, more like "Unplugged" before it was cool), and Karaoke a lot.  Yeah, the jitters are a bitch.  But the funny thing is, I learned to get into the adrenalin buzz and pour it into performing.  I still freak out when I'm surrounded by a crowd, but being in front of one, not so much.  It's like I become this other person who only comes out when I'm on stage, which is something one of the greatest showmen of all time (IMO), Cab Calloway, talked about in interviews.

I wouldn't recommend getting drunk - then again, I'm a recovering alcoholic.  If you can have a shot or two to loosen up, and then leave it at that, that might be OK.  But watch out you don't get dependent on it.  I'm not preaching, I just think performing is a lot of fun and should be enjoyed with unhindered senses.

Yeah, it's never easy. Having done a load of random shit in front of crowds (although not much music, and hardly anything with just me on stage), is:

- What's the worst that can happen? Either:
... 1) The crowd hates you and heckles you - hey! that's rock'n'roll, one for the memoirs.
... 2) The crowd ignores you - so, do what the fuck you want, the pressure's off.
... 3) Only a few people dig you - great, that's a few proper fans!

On the other hand, they could all get behind you and it'll rock!

- As long as you enjoy it, and have a connection with the crowd (eye contact or whatever) then chances are they'll be behind you.

- Chances are, before you're on, it'll be kinda stressful, but once you're up and running you can get into "the zone" and everything runs smoothly from there... Break a leg dude!

I've not doen the electronics and noise live yet, but i used to play lots of gigs with metal and indie bands. and to be honest i did to many gig after a few too many drinks beacuse of nerves (luckily I was only the singer).

I always found the first 3 mins of any gig were the hardest. once you get going, it's easy and the fun can start.

if you are nervouse us the adrenaline to push you on.

I loved 'Countney Love Sucks Cock In Hell'. You have some good tracks under your belt. So try not to worry and GOOD LUCK, Sir!

It"s hard for me not to think of these thoughts as a rehearsal for future meanings.

just remember that no matter what "mistakes" you may make, the audience will have no idea. even bands that have audiences that know every note of every song can get away with fuck-ups without anyone noticing...

i'd also recommend a beer or three, but not more than that.

if only i could learn to take that advice - -- i've never hit the stage on less than 5 drinks and i really don't remember any of my shows very well.

it's time to try playing sober...

the reason im afraid of getting too drunk is because im being paid in booze for this gig.
i think i'll just have one to sip on while im playing.

a short review of my gig last night:

well i was outside smoking when the promoter 'sharkey' told me to "get in and play now!" - so i did. i ran inside and without thinking jumped onto the stage........after this the nerves kicked back in. i quickly looked up at the crowd of roughly 15 -20 people and noticed that they were all people i knew. the nerves quickly fell away. anyway, no real mistakes or freak outs during the set. after the second song i started enjoying it and doing silly dances and movements to the music. i have no idea what it sounded like because the monitors were crap. but people came up to me afterwards and told me it sounded great threw the pa.

all in all. im very happy with the results. i have a few pictures and 1 really pixelly video of me playing that i'll show you all at some point in the near future.
