I've not got the VVM tread.
But have you dug up the Planet-mu thread (looking back the success of this really does laugh in the face of the people that were negitive about the idea).

the planet mu board thread. not quite as funny as i remember, but it is pretty ironic that that guy TwentyKnives came on and had a big rant that 'you should work harder to make good music so that people will pay you money to release it' ... but no-one cares about his shit now and he is trying to sell it from his own site online.

On 14/05/2005 at 02:41 solypsis wrote in a topic called "Topic: fucking retarded, insanely brilliant, or just kind of lame?":
OK --- i've got this idea for a compilation. i shared this idea over at cock rock disco and noone seemed to go for it, but i like the idea and thought i'd spring it on you people. if it's a good idea, let me know. if it's shit, let me know so i can let it die a quiet death.
so - what would happen if people paid for their tracks to appear on a compilation?
CD's and records are expensive to press, we all know that. unfortunately, someone has to foot the bill when a record comes out. usually it's either a tiny label that gets fucked financially, or a corporate piece of shit that gets millions of dollars of promotion (and usually fucks over the artist on the back end)...... what if we all shared the burdon of producing a record?
for example, a CD that has 500 copies pressed costs roughly $1000 (U.S. Dollars). if 25 artists split the cost of producing it, it would be $40 for each artist to have 3 minutes of track time. Or, if the record had 100 tracks of 45 seconds in length each artist would pay $10. basically, each artist would pay proportionate to how long their song is. then, each artist would receive 20 copies to do with as they wish --- give them away, sell them, whatever. (if there were 100 artists, everyone would get 5 copies). to put it simply: EVERYONE WOULD GET VERY CHEAP PUBLICITY AND SEVERAL COPIES OF THE DISC. no profit would be made by the label pressing it. this would be done entirely for people to get their name out there, because getting recognized is a bitch and everybody deserves a shot at being heard.
i think if less than 25 bands contributed it would not be worth it. people would be paying too much for such little track time, but the more people are involved, the cheaper for everyone. of course, noone would pay until enough artists were involved so noone gets fucked over.
i think the beauty of this idea is it gives ANYBODY a chance to be heard for just a few bucks. .
plus, i love the idea of this being a little sociological experiment --- putting all the pride and elitist bullshit out of the picture. the record will be proudly advertised as "I PAID TO BE PLAYED" or some shit. fuck egos. fuck being "credible". just get heard.
sure, the record could totally suck, but WHO CARES? it could be so bad it's wonderful, or just kick-ass because it's a bunch of people making music because they love making music. i'll be happy to cough up the first $10.
what do you think?
PS - JAMES, if this is spam, please move the thread there! thanks.

awesome! thanks, ANE!
hmmm...i'm actually sorta proud of that post....in my memory it had somehow become a poorly worded mess (perhaps because i phrased this same idea so poorly on planet mu, to ill effect).
it's so strange to see that in light of what has since transpired.
anyways, thanks for finding this. is it fair to say that that post should be preserved somewhere as part of our history or presskit? or am i being vain?

No problem.
Unfortunately, the Archive.org link only goes one page into any forum section; any further and you get sent to the new + blue version.
I've also dug up the original(?) "React now to V-vm!!" page: 134Kb of CUPOFTEA, ab-b, beep and more. Things have calmed down a lot since then.
EDIT: A "Digital Vomit: Can Buy Me Love" history is good idea, as part of a general background to the whole collection. Too many times, I'll come across an old compilation or album and end up not knowing anything about the background to it, save for just another list on the label's discography page. That said, I understand that some things in the history of CBML are best left in the past.
