I've actually yet to hear a single good thing about Cafepress. Everything up to now's been negative, in terms of the quality of the products themselves, ie. bad fabrics and poor transfers. Not to mention the amount of money they make from these shitty products, and how little of it goes to the people actually designing them. From everything I've gathered, it seems like it's essentially for people too lazy to go to PC World and buy some special paper to iron their designs onto shirts themselves. Guy's shirts on the other hand are fantastic, have lasted me ages so far, and I intend to buy a third one from him as soon as I can afford to. Which shouldn't be too far along the line now, considering what good value for money they are.

In other words - I would buy a DigiVom t-shirt if Guy made it. I would not buy one if Cafepress made it. Go figure.

Keith - where's your review?! I need to be validated!

To be fair, they do offer direct printing now as well as the shitty heat transfer style print. And IIRC, you can set the price, so if you didn't want to make any money at all, the Ts would come down to a reasonable price to buy. That said, I think it goes without saying that it would be better to do it amongst ourselves if possible.

Disk One review:

D1

  1. Good opening track, could go anywhere after this. Slow and brooding track.
  2. a statement of intent
  3. The first of the fast and choppy tracks.
  4. Like a 70 kiddies TV program ident music, but just a bit skewed.
  5. This'll having you going a jig. Folk-core (lord of the dance would be bearable is this was the music). And you can't fault a bit of Chesney.
  6. Starts off as a clever noise rhythm, and then goes everywhere.........indescribable
  7. You can tell this is Hard-off just from the samples. Classic
  8. Robo's, ANS sample hacking. Shit happens.
  9. Before this shit. Nice track tie in with 8. Musically (vocal looping and glitchzz) and lyrically this follows perfectly.
  10. The first true ?song of the CD'. Guitar and beats. Nice breakdown in the middle.
  11. starting as a full on noise track, The nice section in the middle become quite disconcerting.
  12. Medieval core.
  13. Medical thrash. Moshing in the A+E
  14. nice. Reminds me of the test card music from my childhood, but brought up to date. (I want to hear more of Patrick's stuff.)
  15. Matt gives us the 80's vibe.
  16. the big smash out on the cost road. If you've not got the top 40's mp3 album.... what have you been doing?
  17. Starting very quiet. Evolving gentle looping madness.
  18. my curve ball to see how Lee would uses it and it works as a brilliant introduction to...
  19. James' beat laden noisy track (one of his most listener friendly).
  20. continues the flow with a soft beats and brooding bass. Would work nice to build tension on a horror movie.
  21. the one track join that is obvious as a little click (sorry Lee). Ups the speed again and gets more industrial (half of it reminds me of throbbing gristle, and half of Psychic TV).
  22. nice drifting tracks, it was nearly at the end before I even notice.
  23. slow and heavy beats. Clever interplay between tune and stretched drums. A fav track for sure. (James, can you help by sending me more of this?)
  24. even my dad (who's comment on getting into my car and hearing this cd, was "I knew this was a bad idea") started to find this relaxing and thought the title and name were clever.
  25. not sure how to describe this. Not a usual mixo track style.
  26. relaxing like the sound of rain.
  27. evokes a feeling like if boards of ffice:smarttags" / onload='javascript:showImageWidth(this,600,600)' class='AutoImageWidthTopic' style='cursor:poionter'>Canada's music has the right had been remixed and recorded by KLF / Orb (Chill out) from the afterlife.......
  28. Chris drops in with a bouncy Clicky little track.  Lush. Like some of AstralAsia's finest bits (good for dancing and chilling at the same.)

Disk 2 review

  1. Good Morning. You'll understand when you hear it. But I'll let that be a surprise.
  2. a blitzkrig on Eurocheese. (great in the car for confusing the nova nova types).
  3. another un catorgaisable track from Brian
  4. another song. With real instruments. Nice feedback. (I think Jesus and the mray chain may be an influence)
  5. I can't help but be reminded of early Cabaret Voltaire. (love it).
  6. Noise Jazz?
  7. fast breaks from the ffice:smarttags" / onload='javascript:showImageWidth(this,600,600)' class='AutoImageWidthTopic' style='cursor:poionter'>Fez
  8. 777 ragga classic.
  9. Patrick reminds me I spend too much of the 80's and early 90's in arcades.
  10. an angry young man. Wonder what it's all about.
  11. Bees.
  12. lounge reading of the dictionary
  13. all of Robo's tracks from my-space mixed into on tracks.
  14. I must be getting old,  can't keep up with the twists and turns on this.
  15. incantations from the monks.
  16. I find no words that can describe suitably.
  17. minimalist beats and bass. Gives way to a lovely tune - will be checking out your website later...
  18. odd. Like an over heard conversation.
  19. another nice slice of imaginative break-core.
  20. what it says on the packet. Scratching and stuff
  21. more classic HO humour and beats. I noticed the ?living in video' samples - I assume that's from Jason cockrock's competition then?
  22. reminds me of something , but I can't put my finger on it.
  23. J advert. Clever. MUST BUY THE ALBUM
  24. analogue synths, guitars and effects boxes. Live recordings.  A bad edit by the artist cuts of sharply (but surprisingly works) as it drops into....
  25. boki's Layered and evolving lovelyness
  26. more nice chilled stuff. Is this the first track form this artist? A very good start. Want more please.
  27. Nice tune. Might have to sample this at some point.
  28. Indie. Good use of lead lines to make it interesting.
  29. perfect ending.

all in all, a brilliant set of CD and one that will get more repeat listens than previous. good work every one. and good work with the ordering Lee.

heres my review now boys.....

Disc 1:

1 - very good choice for first track, eases you in nicely
2 - short and to the point, i like it
3 - the crazyness kicks off with this track, fast and insane
4 - i think keith hit the nail on the head with the 70's kid show thing, reminds me of that show 'Look Around You'
5 - me old matie doing what he does best, long live spudcore
6 - what i imagine flying around the internet sounds like, if you were a piece of info (or something)
7 - more horse-core from hardoff, i dont think i could ever get sick of those samples.....they're pure gold
8 - what really killed anna-nicole.
9 - its almost as if me and keith planned this flow. they work very well side by side.
10 - bassy and rockin'....very nice track
11 - the sound of losing your mind perhaps......temporary madness anywho
12 - first track i've ever heard from this guy and i'd like to hear more. i really like the melody
13 - makes all those 'hardcore' punk bands i've ever seen seem tame as fuck....play a gig in ireland guys
14 - more 70's kids show/keyboard demo...in a good way
15 - seems like a 80's hit released 20 years too late.....simple but effective
16 - i really like samples of australian people for some reason....some of guys special brand
17 - very quiet, loops and glitches
18 - i cant imagine it being placed in front of any other track as an intro...works well
19 - probably my favorite song from solypsis, and i like lots of his stuff
20 - me trying to be drony and scary...whether it worked or not is for you to decide
21 - sounds like a drummer recorded in a wind tunnel
22 - my first encounter with teterom and hopefully not my last, very calm and pleasant
23 - industrial sounding, reminds me of the soundtrack to the game 'Quake'
24 - i dont know how to describe this really. it would be easy to pass it off and say 'eno-esque', but its not really. i like it though.
25 - i cant make out the westlife song at all(thank god), like nothing i've ever heard from lee before. a new direction perhaps?
26 - very minimalist, sounds to me like oil boiling. with defective machines in the background.
27 - nice ambient/chill out track, the sound of walking in the rain.
28 - very cool track to finish off the disc, makes you curious to see whats on the next disc straight away.

disc 2 review will be written later

fuck it, i'll just do it now

Disc 2:

1 - the sound we all dread
2 - cheesy cheese chopped up to bits
3 - some noisy video game music to hurt the kids with
4 - droney guitar and synth, i really like this short track
5 - something very noisy that wasn't made with a computer, nice for diversity
6 - impossible to describe, chopped up guitar and beats
7 - the fez lays down the law, and beats you up real nice
8 - i dont know who al corrupt is so i dont get the tribute. sounds like noise-jungle
9 - crazier 70's kids show
10 - break-core metal done very well
11 - i think the title says it all
12 - everything you ever wanted to know about beavers
13 - keith takes a few of my older tracks and makes them useful
14 - starts off very noisy and then disappears in a shroud of samples and crazy beats
15 - another one of my friends, one of melf's very nice tracks
16 - im sure my neighbors thought i was watching porn for this one
17 - im never disappointed by a datarapist track, good stuff
18 - another track im not really sure how to describe, reimnds me of something i cant remember
19 - some nice breakcore, which actually makes eminem ok to listen to
20 - noise distorted to fuck
21 - being a fan of both primus and south park, i really like this track
22 - 70's kids show mixed with jean michel jarre
23 - truly genius track here, i already got your album joe
24 - murky and dark, kind of reminds me of the blade runner soundtrack
25 - boki begins the wind down so you know the end is near, very nice
26 - the wind down continues with a slightly noisier track, but only slightly
27 - a beat is re-introduced, i actually really like this tune
28 - i agree with lee on this one, sounds like the end credits of a very confusing manga (neon genesis evangelion = impossible to follow)
29 - i can only make out the song in question at the very beginning, but it seems like a fitting noisy end to a noisy series

i would say that this is probably the best cbml. in terms of artwork, packaging and the music too.
its always a shame to see a good thing die.......but im sure this comp will stand the test of time.

We've been listening to CBML4 whilst inflicting brutal, unnecessary surgery on each other's private parts and can honestly say it's the best yet. The Ivixx (sic) track particularly stands out, much like our now utterly ruined faces and peni. Well done Mr Ashcroft and all concerned.

OK, here's my review.

First up, the packaging looks superb, very distinctive colour, great graphics, very professional looking. The only small problem for me is that the writing on the spine is running in the wrong direction, but hey, so do a lot of my other CDs.

Well done to everyone involved!

Track by track (wow, an amazing number of tracks squished onto both CDs, definitely looks like good value for money!)

CD1

1 - A nice opener, easy going ambient track, not what I was expecting to find first.
2 - Excellent, a bit of branding, awesome (:
3 - Ah, it starts! Bang bang bang bang. Big tweaked up gabbacore. Well produced, solid fun.
4 - Casiocore. Ah, the horrors of a tinny general midi soundset. Lovely tune. Straight into -
5 - Hmmm. Great, it's some kind of dubstep folk mash-up! I'd like to hear more like this (:
6 - Now we're tuning into a different channel... Well, moving through the spectrum... Interesting, where will we end up?
7 - Horsecore! First hardcore dose of cheese too. Already dig this track.
8 - Shit happens. Yup.
9 - Ah, more shit. Inspired connection of sequencing. An interesting track, slows down the pace of the CD a little though.
10 - CATB, favourite from CBML3, picking up the slack with some bombastic thrashy glitch rock. A good 'un, but sadly not as great as CBML3's track for my money.
11 - Really LOUD noise! With some awful high pitches. Christ I think my ears are on fire. Then, ah, there's a doomy tune. Awesome.
12 - So this sounds kinda quiet now... Interesting melodies over some amen break action.
13 - YES YES YES. AHHH! SO LOUD. That last track was a trap to get me to turn the volume up, right? Awesome extreme metal noise, with a great little narrative 4.5/5 (:
14 - More casiocore. Sounds like the background music you get on hotel TV channels when they're showing the programme guide. Nice melodies (:
15 - Ah, I know this one! Dodgy "singing", dodgy song. Slow(ish) and 4-to-the-floor which is pretty unusual for DigiVom, eh?
16 - Thank god that was over... And into... Ninja Tune Hip-hop, done DigiVom style? Great stuff
17 - Clicks, hiss, turning into some pretty special electronica
18 - ROCK'n'ROLL
19 - Glitches all over the show! With a catchy melody over the top. Very Aphex Twin, in a good way, if RD James was into noise.
20 - Ooh, nice, minimal, atmospheric. Please can I remix this one ROBOstud? I promise not to sing again.
21 - Hmm, it's like The Prodigy, but played back a little skewed on some muffled drums? Like it.
22 - Old school ambient, and that's definitely a compliment
23 - Chunky beat, big doomy (almost industrial) sound, very well produced, reminds me of some of Tigerbeat's slower artists
24 - Loving this, really great dark ambient piece. One to listen to in a darkened room. I'd buy an album of this. Anyone wanna organise a DigiVom beatless ambient album. It'd go down a treat I reckon, and you could totally turn it into an installation.
25 - Very interesting sounds. If this was a food, it'd be some bizarre kid's sweet, that says it tastes of cola, but really tastes of some kind of Japanese plastic, delicious.
26 - Another interesting ambient track, unusual sounds, goes together with Mixo's surprisingly well, another strong point of disc sequencing
27 - Ah, from drips/crackles on 26 to hiss on 27, lovely
28 - A little bit of melody to go out on. Complex, tuneful track, halfway between Radio 3's Late Junction and something on Kompakt. Really really like it. CD1 ends leaving you wanting more, definitely.

I'd say there's not a duff track on all of CD1. People are either talented, or energetic/idiosyncratic, and a few cases both, so it's definitely a CD to be proud of. Again, I feel like my track is about the weakest on there, and I was pretty pleased with mine this time, so the quality is really really high.

Great sequencing too, hectic tracks punctuated by noise, shit-to-shit, interesting samples, really ties the whole thing together. Starts fast, slows but broadens, then brings in some ambient tracks in the last third (which eases the listening experience, it has to be said... CBML comps can be kinda tiring when it's all bang bang bang NOISE). And there's no major quiet-to-loud-to-quiet issues like we've had before. The only time it happens to my ears is when Massive Hospitalisation's track slams in, but to be honest it works there.

Overall CD1 gets a hearty 4/5 from me.

CD2

1 - Ah, is it that time already? Eeek, up with Hooray's CBML1 track for inaction. Might lead a few people to think their CDs broken. Then bath time (:
2 - BIA bringing the cheesy cut-up to a warzone. Rave on! Where's the BIA album? I'll buy it if it has Doug in his sci-fi pop-fascist uniform on the cover (:
3 - Player One Ready! Power up! Tasty chipstyle cut-up
4 - A short song with crashing guitars, a nice surprise
5 - Yeah! Loving this. Low-fi distorted electro-punk! Like Suicide or the like. Fuck yeah, this rocks! 4.5/5
6 - Free jazz cut up, made even freer then I suppose. Good sequencing, with more live sounds, following on from 4 and 5. Builds into a riff, and falls to pieces again. Great stuff
7 - Ah yeah, the tightest hardest breakcore on CBML4. Great production, and ravetastic
8 - Raggacore, if raggacore were 80bpm and distorted to buggery (:
9 - More casiocore... Muffled free jazz casiocore... AKA, my cat has walked over my keyboard... Then suddenly -
10 - Agghhghugh! RAAAR! Metal-ish breakcore mayhem. Top stuff. Want to hear more like this.
11 - Animals, lots of strange animals. Actually pretty disturbing.
12 - Gosh, another real band?! Like Morcheeba (sorry), but at least I'm learning something about beavers
13 - It's all gone wrong, whatever it was. Awkward fun
14 - UUAAHHHAAHAA! Then, a million things happen. Again, good sequencing from Mixo to lead from 13 to 14. A little bit too long, but Bananaman redeems this for me.
15 - Took me a while to get into (a little bit 90s electronica), but builds into a cracking beats + ambience piece
16 - She's faking it. You know, if someone really made a tune with their girlfriend coming in it, that'd be great. This is just a tad piss taking.
17 - Yeah, I like this a lot, the staccato melody sounds a lot like something I would have done, and the beat chugs along nicely.
18 - Random noises, lots of them, forming a nice link with tracks 13, 14...
19 - Awesome breakcore from Eraserhead, tying with The Fez's for top in the tight edits, tough beats world.
20 - Noise like a mouse scratching at your brain
21 - More solid breakcore from Hardoff, this time in the cut-up cheesy samples style. A staple of the DigiVom diet
22 - More casiocore from Patrick May. Super cheesy again. Has he just pressed the demo key on the keyboard :P
23 - Clever. Actually better than I thought it was going to be, with a whole load of sounds mixed in with the infomercial. Too clever for my liking, but there you go.
24 - Oooh, tune! Awesome krautrock synth and guitar and low-fi productions. More please! Guess I should check out Hallo Ex for some downloads, right?
25 - Another live sounding track, and another good one, minimal melodic, krautrocky electronica. Lovely, reminds me of To Rococo Rot, and the like. Really enjoy this one.
26 - Washes of noise, and ambience. Nice, really good. Reminds me of Hooray's "windsock" track from CBML2, and I was big fan of that one too. Seriously, let's do an ambient album, hey guys?
27 - Another live track, melodic electronica, strong melody, changes, builds, love it (:
28 - Well, like Greece voting for Cyprus in the Eurovision, I love Hooray's track, but then I would say that wouldn't it? Especially considering that it's a Stereolab-y cover version of my track from CBML1 (:
29 - Hahaha, very good, 4'33" like a tribute to John Cage, only not quite (: A great way to go out, even if denies Hooray his third CD ending track.

Well, CD2 starts by taking CMBL4 in a different direction, with some live sounds, and all the better for it. Then into some of the expected breakcore (track 7, from The Fez!), but it's an outstanding example of the genre. It goes out on a limb after that as things get a bit looser, noisier, more random, then interspersing tighter beats with random noise over the next few with Audible Axis on 15, Datarapist on 17, Eraserhead on 19, Hardoff on 21, representing the beats, Mr Cunt on 16, Goodiepal's on 18, DJ YSL on 20, representing the random. And then back to the live sounding stuff with tracks 24 onwards.

I'll still give CD2 a 4/5, but it's little bit more reserved than CD1, because there's a lot of random noise in the middle that is a little bit hard work. That said, it's book-ended by lots of great live sounding tracks, so it's all good.

Great sequencing between the two discs from Mixo. CD1 is definitely the breakcore and noise to ambient disc, and CD2 is the live sound to randomness via breakcore and back to live disc.

Overall, I'd give CBML4 - 4.5/5. Really. Because there's about 8 or 9 tracks that I think are simply awesome, which is a good albums worth. Then there are the other 48 (yes!) that come with them as a bonus! Two CDs, 57 tracks of goodness! Seriously, what more could you want.

Even though it's unintentional, I'd say it's interesting how well formed and coherent the "Digital Vomit" sound is - noisy, glitchy, cut-up samples, occasional super jolly melody, occasional doomy atmosphere, intelligent, contemporary electronic music.

People really should feel proud of themselves right now. This is the stuff that marks your place in history!

Subsonika. Setting the manifesto.

Peter Z & Lisbent. Really cheered me up. I felt I was listening to one of the shows of the late great Peel.

Alien Hand. 'Not like the boys of Milan, then'.

7u?. Pushin' buttons!

Soto Voce snippet made great intro for Solypsis, 'So Dar-nce!'.

ROBOstud, Thee Crumb, My Boy Is Dead. Reflective and melancholic.

The Fez!. 3am. Headphones on. Lights out. Immersed.

Maruosa. Genius.

Eraserhead. Love it. Eminem; whinge, whinge, whinge.

Datarapist and IIVIX. Transported me to another world in fine fashion. Just like the 1980's.

Deep. Excellent, like early Red Snapper. Is there a longer version Deep?

Hooray. What a sweet way to round off a great compilation.

Can't praise top artwork by Scott Wolf enough.

I had a good listen for the first time last night. A 1st class product. The sound quality of all the tracks are nice and loud without having to keep one hand on the volume. The various styles of music squeezed into 2cd's is awesome and kept me interested throughout the listen. Very well compiled Lee! The packaging has to be the best to date. Good to hear some new artists too,,,,,,refreshing

From Smallfish records

Where to begin? Well, Goodiepal brought this into the office for me, so you know it's all going to be a bit chaotic and, you know what? It is! Vast amount of short tracks on this double CD that take in noise, breakcore, experimental sounds and even a spot of midi-file type shenanigans. It's all rather strange, but the sheer variety on offer is surprisingly compelling. With tracks from Goodiepal himself, Khonnor (which really is a great one, by the way), Same Actor, Twocsinak, Patrick May, the delightfully named Mr C**t, Soto Voce and about 50 more artists, it's a bargain... sort of! Worth checking I reckon.

Smallfish

Pretty good from Smallfish there, they've certainly be known to slag off records they don't like (even though they're trying to flog them!)

Some previews there too. They're gooduns n'all - Subsonika, Khonnor, Teterom, Pistol Disco, Russ & Ray and Goodiepal.

I've listened but don't have time just now to do it justice.  Although I have quite the sentimental attachment to CBML2, I do think this is the most well-rounded, good-looking and listenable volume.  Will that do until I can write a proper review?

Someone should really keep a cuttings archive for all the reviews etc, because who knows what's happened to anything people said about CBML2 and 3? Would be useful to keep all this stuff :P

I've had very little time recently, but as soon as I've got a few hours free I'll try and post a review.

So far I've only had the chance to play both discs through a couple of times - but it sounds excellent. Especially like the way it all fits together (and without any real volume diffences).

BTW, I've stuck a few copies up on eBay (they're here).
I'll let you know how they go. Incidently, sorry I had to censor the track listing - a complete pain in the arse, but eBay (guardians of moral propriety that they are) won't let anything that contains swear words in either the title or description appear in any searches, which would make the whole exercise rather pointless. So shit, cunt and bastard are right out, I'm afraid. But rectum, bitch and westlife are fine...
