OK, so CBML4 is like CBML3 right in terms of WYRIWYG (What You Record Is What You Get, i.e. no additional mastering).
Now, I don't have a problem with that at all, in fact I think it's a great idea given the diversity of the music on offer, and the fact that at least one person won't be happy with an outside mastering job in their track (yes, it's been me before).
So my question is, what is everyone doing to their own tracks in terms of recording and mastering? Is it literally press record on tape and hope for the best? Is it record, normalise the levels? Or are you EQing, compressing, expanding & using black magic to make you track as loud as possible?
I'm asking because I don't want my track to sound really quiet, but I don't want to have to fiddle with compressing it loads either (and probably fucking it up in the process).
...
By the way, what kind of trickery do they use to make commercial CDs sound so bloody loud? I know it's compression, but I've fiddled with the settings no end and have never made it sound as loud as say, the latest Bonkers CD.

In response to the last bit, I think they just push the volume up and let it clip.

Yeah, but it's clipping without distorting, whereas if I try and push the volume up to match, it all just goes crunch crunch. That said, those Bonkers CDs are really tiring on the ears after a while, so it's probably not a good thing whatever they do.
Basically I get the principles - compress to bring down the loudest bits, then volume up as much as you dare (including clipping) - but I've just never got it to work. There must be some lovely plug in I can downlo- ahem, buy, that'd do some automagic loudifying?

On most commercial CDs, they just apply limiters at the end of the mastering to make 'em as loud as possible. It's probably OK on 4/4 dance music you're only gonna hear in clubs, but why they have to do it to everything now is beyond me - you never had this trouble when it was all vinyl..

"you never had this trouble when it was all vinyl.. "
back then you got the compression right at the recording stage. personally i think the loss of dynamics is lost with too much compression and eqing.
I tend to only eq out bad noises that sond bad on tinny speakers (and that tends to be eqing on the samples to get them cleaner) other wise i think to leave it as is. nor even sure if i normalised the tracks i passed to lee (so i'm dammed with what ever i'vedone now)

I won't even attempt to describe the lengths I go to to get my tunes to sound the way I want. I have broken my own brain several times over with my preposterously elaborate production methods. Don't end up like me, just mix it well, boost the fucking volume and be done with it!
A good limiter plugin (or hardware) will take away your pain, also a teensy weensy sprinkle of distortion can beef things up nicely. Compression is the devil, use it sparingly.

hahaha, that's the spirit (:
For the record, in the end I compressed a little, EQed the bass up a little, and then just made it as loud as possible without the clipping sounding too bad. Let's hope it sounds OK. My singing still sounds awful though.
