Yeah, I have to agree that it's just not that striking. Otherwise, I don't have a problem with it - I mean, I once suggested gay prostitution as a theme. Maybe a more burlesque-ish pose would help?

i say, if you're gonna go over-the-top, go OVER-THE-TOP. this isn't nearly garish enough. more bling, more diamonds, more 100 dollar bills and more flesh.
i'm not terribly thrilled about the existing cover, though. sorry.

Doesn't particularly grab me. Although I'm aware that this isn't the finished thing, there's nothing that suggests this is a parody. Don't "blingin" Hip Hop albums usually have that Ye Olde style font. Here's something I knocked up for Wrong Music that never got used. Just to give you an idea of what I mean about the font.

Yup, I'd agree with that... Personally, I love the font, and the direction in general, but the cover as a whole needs way more bling... Push it much much further into parody... Add some "digital"/synthpunk gabbacore/geek-chic touches to clue in the people we want to buy it.
I'm not bothered about the chick in her scanties, but I think I'd rather see some original photography of something? Or a more blatent collage/mash-up (as per Pidg's cover for 1, which rocked).
Also, I'm never that happy with the covers just saying "CBML" because that doesn't mean anything to anyone. I'd want to see it - our name, our concept - written out in full - "Can Buy Me Love, Volume 4"
Plus, and here's the thing... You see, if I imagine myself digging into the bargain bucket crates, pulling out CDs, then I'd totally overlook this one as being something I wasn't interested in. Compare some awesome things I've found in the buckets, and how quickly you can work out that it's going to be the right kind of shit:
Ministry of Shit, with the shit-smeared MOS cover. Instantly know what this is going to be about:
Kid 606, Action Packed Mentalist, tells it like it is:
DJ Scotch Egg, you know this is going to be hectic:

By which I'm not saying that it should look like any of those covers above, just that we need to talk to the same audience.

i dont really have much to say except much more bling is needed. a ridiculous amount of bling. something that will make people either laugh or scoff at it when they see it. i also think that we shouldn't have an actual picture of a woman, a drawing or painting would be much better i think.
by the way, is that guy frank sidebottom still in on this?

OK, this may be my one and only post on here.
I offered to do the artwork for CBML as a bloody favour to you all, as no-one else was bothered to step up to it. I took in the discussion that you all had previously about BLING and ripping off an R n B cover (a parody of). The image that was posted (I had NO idea that it was going to go up on the board yet), was a Lo-Res draft, not a true representation.
I am pretty damn well pissed off, that dispite the fact that you ALL already had the discussion about the artwork, that you all now go ahead and dissect and whinge about my efforts. Any comments about the artwork concept should have been made BEFOREHAND.
I used to be a professional artist, and I'm doing this as a FAVOUR. Frankly, if you think you can do better - do so.
Otherwise, get your acts together - grow up and gimme a shout when you can all be big boys and girls and think of a JOINT plan.

Um, hello, sorry for any offence taken, and obviously the rightful process wasn't taken here with regard to supplying feedback, but personally I wasn't moaning, just offering feedback.
As a professional artist, I would have thought that perhaps you were used to clients offering feedback and amends to designs? I would have thought that it was fairly unusual for a design to fulfill the brief entirely right first time? Perhaps some people's tone here came across a little badly, but I think suggesting that us collectively refining the art direction (especially when everyone has something invested in it) is somehow immature ("Big boys and girls") is frankly a little insulting.

Sorry if you took offence, but that reaction was possibly a little uncalled for.
Surely it is better for people to offer their genuine opinion? Anyways, I'm definately keeping my beak out of this one from here on in. Had no idea prides were at stake.

"Calm down, dear, it's a commercial!"
OK, joking notwithstanding i think this is making a mountain out of molehill. I'm sure no offense was intended and everybody has the best intentions at heart.
Mixo - you should really have told UKDragon that the image would be on the forum for discussion before you posted it.
UKD - you should have expected some critiscism and if you don't want to do the artwork anymore then fine, someone else can do it. If you are still happy to do the artwork then we need to make sure we do indeed reach a JOINT decision about it and that you don't waste time working on something that doesn't work.
Everyone else -if you need to post your ideas in this thread BE CIVIL ABOUT IT
Let's all calm down and have a cup of tea (coffee if you're American), biscuits and a chat. it think we can safely say that there are several things we agree on jointly and several we don't. the font / logo is great and the hip hop type theme really works well. i think we can safely consider those elements as done.
The main things i think we need to consider are the background colour, the actual picture of the young lady (we need to fuck around with it a bit) and the "tone" of the thing - it really needs to be an obvious parody! I think saying it looks "a bit rubbish" is unfair and not very constructive. I might download that picture and play with it myself a bit, but you've by and large got the essence of my original idea spot on!
There's still the back cover to consider as well - suggestions on a virtual postcard. I was thinking something reminiscent of a Carcass cover but with tits 'n' ass rather than bits of corpses?

UKD again
Iviix - Yes, as a professional, I do understand the concept of not hitting the brief at the first instance, and I also understand the concept of getting the brief right in the first place. The insult arose purely out of the fact, that I was doing this as a favour, and everyone was merrily slagging off my work, without anyone even having the courtesy of letting me know that a)it had been posted up and b)if it wasn't for Keith, I wouldn't even have known that this was going on.
As for you being insulted, how would you like it, if you did something as a favour, only to have it ripped apart unconstructively.
*Deep cleansing intake of breath*
Thank you Doug for your post - I am calmed down dear! An hour of sparring will do that for you!
I am happy to continue to do the artwork, for for goodness sake, can we all sing from the same hymnsheet?

i rekon if your going to ask someone to do the art let em do the art.
i can tell you this is exactly the reason the art for CBML2 was so terrible...
i think if your going to do a collaboration on the art here on the forum that also has merit....but start from scratch....dont go pulling UK dragons ideas apart saying we will use this bit and that bit its insulting.
yes this is a collabrative group but do we carry on this way with track submissions....no.
doing the art is the same as submitting a track and should be given the same respect.

the CBML2 artwork was not terrible, all the problems were with the fonts and layout.
I don't think it was ever really discussed exactly how things would work with the artwork this time as for 2 and 3 you pretty much had a free reign to do your own thing after everyone chipped in ideas. I agree that the artwork deserves respect but i totally disagree that it's the same as making a track. You can say what you want with a track but you have to have certain things on the cover.
Stop editing your posts lee, now we can't see the damn picture anymore to talk about it!!!! What's said is said and everybody is pretty much cool about it now.

maybe next time we do a compilation we should split the cd into sections and let everyone involved make their own artwork.

there will always be bitching, regardless of methods used. just gotta learn to live with it, my friend.
by the way --- i'm using hooray's computer here in the UK....just arrived....almost got detained by immigration and sent home, seriously. they said i needed a work permit to play in colchester. suffice to say, i got through OK but i nearly had a heart attack.
andrew (hooray) is an amazingly kind fellow, BTW. you all should be lucky enough to meet him.

I was going to post a couple of times regarding the artwork, but I just had a bad feeling about the whole thing and couldn't. Now I know why... (Incidently, I agree completely with Doug)

One of us in the UK should've mentioned this to you before you got on the plane - it would've saved you a lot of grief and possibly a wasted trip.
They're right - you do need a work permit (even for one gig in Colcester) so, as and when you do play in the UK again, just lie and tell them you're coming in to see friends, don't mention a word about playing a gig or any kind of work.
I used to play bass in a hardcore band for a while in the late 90s and witnessed what American bands had to do to get round this. It usually involved playing gigs in Germany or Holland first and then sneaking across the channel accompanied by some Germans, who pretended to be the band while the Americans pretended to be tourists, as they had no chance of meeting Immigration's criteria for getting work permits.
You were quite lucky to have been let through as I've heard of people being refused entry for less.
