Right, time to work out these costs.

OK...

To press 500 CDs with Dual Plover costs $335AUD. Including commission, $469AUD. Shipping to the UK - $155AUD. Altogether - $624AUD. In pounds...

UK subtotal: ?49. Let's say ?50 for convenience.

I have emailed CShells about getting a quote for 500 DiscSavers, as to do so on their website would mean having to get 400 ($125) and 100 ($32). The total of this would be $157USD. This is still to be confirmed however. So for now...

UK subtotal: ?50 + ?5 (actually around ?3) = ?35.

Looking at Jakprints.com, for 500 2.5"-4" diameter circlular stickers with 1 colour (lets face it, we won't need anything more) is $100USD. However, I'm going to email Rank Sinatra to see if he can print stickers or not. He seems to be able to do everything else, so we shall see. And you know you'll get a quality product with him doing it. There's every chance it might be cheaper too.

So, at a rough estimate, incorporating everything I am yet to work out properly, I'd like to think the total cost of making the CD will come to no more than ?00. This means that for 20 participants, each will have to spend no more than ?5-30. But there are still some things to work out here. When all costs have been confirmed 100%, I will start a new thread. In the mean time... get working on tracks, tell your friends if you reckon they might want to buy themselves some love (Colchester guys The Abominable Mr Tinkler and Bad Loader might be doing tracks thanks to this very word-of-mouth process), and start saving the pennies!

Can we release this as a Creative Commons thing? If there's enough space on the label for the logo, I guess.

I'd recommend "Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0" which basically means that people can sample, copy, play, recreate etc. anything on the disc, provided its: not for commercial use; attributed to the original creator; and the new version holds the same Creative Commons license as this (ShareAlike).

Here's the license in full: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/uk/ (don't need all this on the label of course, just the small logo and license type.

Alternatively, there are versions that allow sampling but no copying, or copying but no derivative works...

http://creativecommons.org/audio/

What do people feel about this?

Iivix - I've personally no issue with this, but I'm not sure if others will. If only one person is against it, then the album cannot be covered by it. And realistically, we can't expect everyone to be 100% OK with it. Shame, but there you go. Unless everyone wants to prove me wrong, of course...

PS. Aussie rock god Scorpio Scorpio is now on board.

Yeah, I know it has to get consent from everyone. I'd like to think everyone shared that idea, but who knows?

The thing is, we're in a slightly strange situation copyright wise anyway, seeing as there's no contracts or the like. Theoretically it means that everyone retains ownership of copyright of their own work, and has agreed for it to be licensed for this one release, but since no one has explicitly said what the situation is (in terms of copying, derivative works, attribution etc), we might not have a defense if someone was to rip any of our stuff off. Just a thought.

I'm fine with it. What would upset me is if someone tried to put a conventional copyright on this stuff. I'm for either voicing an alternative or saying nothing.

im 100% cool with the creative commons bit. i think it makes a bit of a statement out of the release with out punching you in the face. . . . i mean fuck, this is pretty much running under hippie law as it is, let's share that fucking free love and the STDs it comes with. . . . . . . . with enough persuasion im sure others will agree.

To not let others smaple you would be plan hipacritical.

don't forget that when you import to the U.K. you have to pay v.a.t. and duty on the value of the shipment. basically they just make it up and you get a bill one week after you get the discs.
usually adds upto 20% to pressing costs.
some of it goes to the royal family, lets hope someone blows them up soon.....

Righto...

Pressing 500 CDs with Dual Plover is ?50, all inclusive.

Printing 500 circular stickers (2" diametre) with 2 inks with Jakprints is $145USD. In English, ?0. This doesn't include delivery, but I'll try and find this out ASAP. Rank doesn't do stickers, FYI.

500 clear flapped PVC sleeves with Covers33, which seems like a sensible solution to the casing problem, is ?0, including delivery. I might be able to get them cheaper though.

So, the subtotal so far is ?10. This will pay for 500 copies of the CD, in clear plastic sleeves with cover stickers. This means that for 20 participants, each will pay ?0.50 for a slot. What I'm considering though is bumping this up to ?5. The extra ?.50 will mean that any extra costs I run into should be covered, and any excess will go onto shipping. Speaking of which, I've now got a rough idea of how much shipping will cost when going to various countries. The absolute maximum is around ?0 per person, I think. This is still TBC, but all will be revealed in good time.

This post is too long, so I'll put a summary in the next one.

One slot on the CD will cost ?5. The excess should cover all PayPal costs, as well as anything else that may crop up. Any remaining money will go onto shipping.

This CD will have 20 slots available. This is what a ?5 slot will get you:

- 25 copies of the final CD, which will include a CD, a PVC sleeve and a sticker.
- 3:36 of time on the CD.
- A whole lotta love.

The team making the CD:

Mixomatosis - compiling, shipping, general management, CD artwork
Pilchard - mastering
??? - sticker artwork

Note that the CD itself should include the tracklisting. An alternative will be to provide an URL to a tracklisting, a bit like what they did with the TV show 'jam', which had no credits but an URL containing the credits website. Last resort though, natch.

13 slots have been taken so far, with a further 3 to be confirmed, which potentially only leaves 4 left! Get your name down ASAP, and even if you're not in the first 20, you may still be used in case of drop-outs, or of course for the inevitable No Time For Love 3.

OK, I think everything has been confirmed now, minus sticker artist. Tracks should be sent to boiledhead@hotmail.com, but please use YouSendIt, and files should preferably be in WAV format, although 192kbps and higher MP3s will be OK too.

Now... go!
