Gah, already? Cock.
OK, I need to have a proper think about this, and test out my PayPal account to see if I can receive money, but what I'm thinking right now is:
- One disc. That's... ONE DISC. As in, ONE. That's one less than two. Some may see that as regressing, I see it as a headache, halved.
- 4:00 each, meaning up to 20 people can have time. However, I'm hoping that some people will go under this, so it's not going up to the absolute maximum. Realistically, it's probably more likely to be 3:40.
- As before, sharing time, splitting time into several tracks, using someone's excess time - all fine. But remember - CDs can only hold 99 tracks, so don't be stupid.
- I've not investigated prices yet, so I don't know how much people will have to pay, but what would be great from a personal viewpoint is if people paid in two chunks - once for the pressing, and again for the postage/shipping. If people don't like this, then I will simply add what I consider a reasonable price onto the pressing price. I believe the first idea will be much fairer, as there will be some who won't have to pay as much postage as others (and Essex/London types might not have to pay a penny, of course).
- No theme. Do what you like with the time. If you want to fart into a microphone for 4 minutes, do it. Your loss, not mine.
- Deadlines. Right, I reckon I might have a way to ensure that this doesn't become an issue. Basically, I'll oversubscribe. Get more people than I need to fill the CD. That way, if some miss the deadline, there should be enough material for the whole CD regardless. Any latecomers can go into the inevitable No Time For Love 3.
- I'm not interested in getting "names" on here. There will be certain people who I'll tell about this project who happen to be "names" (namely Cassetteboy and a couple of the Wrong Music/Complaints Department guys), but I've no interest in putting out tracks be people who a) will give the album 'credibility' and especially b) people who don't want to pay. If they reckon they're too big to pay, let them fuck off back to Planet Mu or wherever the fuck they're earning their pocket money.
- I've not asked them yet, but hopefully I'll be able to get the boys from Pilchard (they did a track on the 7u? Xmas compilation) to master it. They owe me a favour. The company one of them works at might be able to press it too. We shall see...
- If anyone wants to design a cover, feel free. If Mr Sinatra wants to do it again, then he's more than welcome.
- 500 copies. Goes without saying, really.
And from what I gather so far, the following folks are interested in contributing:
- Mixomatosis
- Solypsis?
- Iivix?
- Max Machismo
- Cats Against The Bomb
- Junkshop Coyote
Which, if I'm correct, is 30% already! Fuck me, at this rate it'll be done by August.

I'm in, and I agree with all your suggestions Mixo.
One extra thing - I don't mind who does the artwork, but it'd be good to see it before everything gets made. So far both CDs have had great covers from a visuals point of view, but there were certainly things that could have been improved about the last one - e.g. tracklisting clarity (inc. track numbers, times, etc.) plus adding label details and some basic contact details etc.

Aye, well I thought that went without saying. Personally I've no gripe with the actual typography of vol 2, but the fucky tracklistings are annoying, ("quieter") so of course I will check everything beforehand. In fact, I'll personally do the tracklisting for the cover, because I am very anal about it.

The whole (quieter) thing was kind of my main objection to the typography. Getting track names wrong and even band names wrong was just stupid.
you can count me in on a couple of conditions:
1) it doesn't cost the earth.
2) we get some sort of discussion of the artwork, fonts, tracklisting etc before anything gets done.

OK, the artwork can wait until the end. I'm not that bothered about it.
The mates rates thing ain't happening, so I shall refer to the world's cheapest pressing plant... Dual Plover. (Did you know they pressed the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' debut EP? I didn't.) All prices are in aussie dollars.
500 CDs = $335 Cardboard slip, including assembly = $520 (as used on The Ottoman Empire, Zatsu Ongaku, CBML1) Shipping to UK = either $310 or $215, I need to check this out
I would have liked to have used either a gatefold sleeve, but the price for this is $1150, more than double the cost of the slip sleeve. So, potentially the maximum total for this release will be $1165, which is roughly $900 USD or ?00 GBP. I'm going to refer to the total cost as ?00 from now on, purely for convenience.
So, if it's ?00 for 500 CDs with cardboard slip sleeves, with delivery, that means if 20 artists contribute the cost per person will be ?5. Any money left over would go towards sending the CDs out to you lot. I think it would be better to give a higher quote now, so that should the pricing be incorrect for any reason, there will be some leeway.
Now, DP say the running time for a CD should be no longer than 72 minutes, realistically. This means each person would get, on average, 3:36, if 20 people were involved. Then obviously should anyone go under people can use this spare time.
In summary... working on the basis that 20 people will be involved, each person shouldn't be expected to pay more than ?5 for the first payment, and each will get on average 3:36 to use.
*collapse*

you've got the advantage of working in Pounds rather than dollars, so the conversion rate will be MUCH better --- so that's cool.
again --- the typography was a minor-disaster last time because too many fucking people had their hands on it and i was not allowed a shot at proofreading it before pressing. as long as all the typography is done by whoever sequences the disc (mixo?), it should be all good.
at 35 pounds sterling, that will be about $70 u.s. --- so yeah, it's never gonna be cheap for us yanks.
right now i'm a tentative "yes", but to be honest i'm so poor that $70 sounds like a lot of money. i'll know better in a month or so if i can do a track...
thanks again for doing this, mixo --- good luck!

I'll try to come up with something around 3:36. but if I cant find anything I want to use of that length, and I have a track just a handful of seconds over...... (since I'm assuming some peoples' tracks would be slightly under that)... if I could suck up those extra few seconds.. I wouldn't mind throwing in a few more buck$.
would that work???

about $74can.... not bad. im in...
why not think if some other kind of packaging - with a little innovative thought im sure we could somehow come up with somehting a little more interesting than the cardboard slip and probably even cheaper.... i dunno - my 2 cents (which are canadian so they may not be worth much).

I'd like to see something other than the cardboard slip case. Perhaps one of those clam shell things. I picked up a DJ /rupture album in one of those the other day, and it looked pretty good. Bit difficult to get an insert of anything in there, but if you get as much as possible on the disc that might not be a problem?
http://www.cshellsdirect.com/
$140 for 500, around $0.28 or 17p each.
http://www.databiz.com/cshells.html
Looks like you can get you can get them from about 19p each in the UK. You can print on them too, if I recall correctly, but that'd bump the price up a lot. Also on that site ideas like tins, and card fold outs etc.
I blagged a load of free sample clam shell cases from these guys once. You use to be able to fill in a form on the website, and they'd send you an email - pretend to be from a business looking for a quote, and they'd send you five samples. Or, do like me, and do it a few times over (to seperate addresses) and get a whole stack.
Let's see now: If each of the 20 participants uses 5 different addresses to 5 blag free samples, we could get all our packaging done for free
Other ideas here:
http://www.covers33.co.uk/
Paper cut out sleeves (also in colour) thin plastic sleeves, boxes etc. All a bit cheap looking, but perhaps if you could do something with them?
Or how about finding something on special offer? Coloured jewel cases here from 12p each:

Wait, let me see if I've got this right: 500 cardboard slipcases with printing = $520 / 500 = $1.04 australian = ?.41 UK.
So at around 22p - 27p (inc. VAT) for clam shells could actually work out cheaper? Of course, you don't get to print on the box for that, but if you can see the disc inside, maybe that doesn't matter.
For about 45p (inc. VAT) we could get those alluringly named "Fetish cases" from the clearance section of Databiz, except that they don't have 500 of them.
Hmm...

Hm... maybe if we had clam shells, put the tracklisting on the CD itself, and plastered KLF-style stickers on the front displaying "CAN BUY ME LOVE 3"... you know, that ain't such a bad idea. And the idea of getting people to send off for free samples could work too. It would save costs... otherwise, they're $140 USD for 500.
I'm going to be fairly occupied over the next couple of days and nights. (Cobra Killer tonight, seeing my dad tomorrow, Jerry Springer the Opera on Saturday) I might get time tomorrow, but if not, Sunday will be a major CD thinking day for me. Keep applying for disc space people, it's first come first served. And tell your friends!

Oh yeah, distribution.
I am not a shop. I don't claim to be a shop, and I don't want the hassle of a shop. Maybe when I get my arse in gear and release a solo album, I'll become a shop. However, if you want to leave some of your copies behind, then I will happily take them, and attempt to make up some of the money I will inevitably lose by doing this. Also, if you want some of your copies to be split between certain shops, I will see if some people would be up for stocking it. (V/Vm, GPFS, etc.)
