Poo. I can't find the post where Solypsis said he wasn't going to supervise the CBML comps anymore, or I'd have just replied to it.Anyway, I'm willing to do it. Mind you, I couldn't do it like James does if I wanted to. I'm like a car nut, my big thrill is playing with the machinery, not organizing people - and I would rather build a real screamer little by little. James has said that he would be willing to stay on as a people guy, and I would need one.I think we can make a classic album, that will empower DIY musicians for years, if we play our cards right though.
not doing it like me is probably the best possible approach --- obviously i'm a neurotic fuck-nut, so mitch will do a fantastic job, to be sure. but yeah --- i'll help out as long as there is no responsibility involved.
i can't wait to see my little rosemary's baby grow into the great satan it is destined to become....

As I've said, I'd be more than happy to collect tracks together and arrange them, and I might be able to get someone to master them for some CD-time and a few copies.

Another idea... this could be a good place to organise split releases featuring only a couple of artists. Maybe.

another interesting idea of doing split or even solo albums so that people if they so desire can invest in a lump sum of copies... if you're interesting in selling your copies how ever many places, or anything like that in sense you;re becoming apart of the distrobution of the disc and making money off any copies sold... i dunno if people will go for that - but it could get to the point where we can approach popular/other artists who'll sell albums and then release for them... an idea. maybe it could work....

it would make this much more functional as a record label... and a chance for people to actually start working as a part of the music industry and maybe make a little bit of money (although as we all know - it's not about the money... it's about the bitches and the drugs)

So, let's do a "for instance"... say I did a Mixo* release on vinyl, and it costs ?000 for 1000 copies. 20 people (including me) donate ?0 towards the costs (and postage), and then each donor gets 50 copies of the vinyl, as well as any freebies people want to chuck in a la CBML2. It goes under the Digital Vomit label, and each person can do whatever they like with the vinyl. Is that the kind of thing we're thinking of here? If so, then (depending on the artist) I'd be 100% up for that.
*replace with whoever, but if you want a Mixo release...

well - for quality control's sake - i guess if anyone has a solo album, they could somehow make all the tracks available to who ever would be interested in contributing to the costs - and then upon listening people can make there own desicion???? i dunno. it may just end up being a way to cut the costs you'd normally expect to absorb forma release, say you only get 4 people - depending on how much they want to put in - you;r still saving that much more off your pressing costs... even after they've been pressed - you can have some kinda deal that people can get them at cost or close to cost to move them faster and cover that much more of the costs you've already absorbed.... hmmm.... this could actually work out real well in alot of ways...
maybe set up a forum where people can post up albums they'd either be interested in splitting space with, or having other people help fund it's pressings... post a zip file - if people like it - take it form there... ????

Not a bad idea at all, a new forum... I think that until some kind of project or artist is confirmed this should probably be kept on the backburner. And even if only 4 people did contribute, that's still only ?50 each for a ?000 release, and you'd get 250 copies.
I'd still like to see CBML3 at some point though...

realistically - i doubt it'll happen often where enough people would be willing to put down that much on some unknown artist who is unlikely to sell that many copies for them (i wouldn't put $250 for 250 copies im likely not to sell very fast if at all)... i think the idea might be is that if people think you have something they can move, say you get 4 people each paying $50 you just knocked $200 off your over all price and as well can assume your music is going to get sold places it might not have before. as well, it'd take a while before you;d get twenty people to pay the $50 each to fund it... it just seems like it;s shooting high - although i guess it could happen... at best i think one would hope to just knock down their own costs and get some of their music out where it wouldn;t have been ordinarilly before hand....

I was thinking along similar lines, but different.
Yeah, the strength of this whole thing is the network, as an alternative means of production and distribution, and that seems to work really well doing a comp. But as for asking someone else to go in and help with production on your solo release, well, dunno about that. Doing split releases sounds like a much more realistic idea. After all, there's only so much cash to go round, and we all wanna get our stuff out, right?
But really what I was thinking was about tapping into the network for distro for solo stuff. So everyone could do their own solo thing (under the Digital Vomit label, if they want), pay for it yerself, and then send copies to people in the network to distro around the world. OK, not suggesting giving it away, although that'd work. Know what would be better? Swapsies! A lot of music gets to travel around the world, we all end up getting a load of new music, and individually, if you do wanna flog stuff, you end up with a much wider variety of stuff to sell. Rather than 250 of your CD (which is kinda a lot to shift), you could have a stack of yours, a stack of someone-elses, and so on...

this is the most realistic approach --- a lot of people like v/vm and cock esp do this exact thing --- trade copies so they have a large assortment of titles to sell. i did this with a few of my releases and ended up with a lot of cool stuff (but i'm all dumb and altruistic and gave them all away to you guys) -- but yeah, if you want to be self-sustaining you could sell all those trades.

Speaking of James' freebies, I finally broke down and bought a microcassette recorder so I could listen to Christopher Jion's tape (and of course make myself a digital copy). Some people just have to be difficult. Anyway... wow. Lots of haunting, dronish and pretty ambient music, sounding as if it were coming over an AM radio during a thunderstorm. I'm tempted to EQ the crap out of it when I burn it to CD, but I know the lo-fi-ness must be intentional given the arcane choice of format, so I guess I'll leave it alone.
Hicc's Distance release is another lovely bit of ambience. Today was my birthday, and hearing both of these for the first time was an awfully nice present. I'm 39 today, and I love ambient like the old fart I am.

yeah - at this stage people probably wouldn;t be terribly interested in putting money down on someone elses release... but still, say this record label idea goes over well and on some strange remote island some sort of digital vomit fanbase is formed... someone might want to throw 'X' amount of $ for 'X' amount of copies to sell... even if it's like $30 for 15 copies or something (i just pulled those numnbers out of my head) - a few people do that and you save $100 on your pressing and some people get a good deal on some discs they can drop places and sell for what ever. . . . obviously though trading makes a hole lot more sense in a few ways... for sure.

wow, thats man. I'm flattered you like it. I've sent those to a select few people.. with a few extras for them to give away to their select few. Alec Empire & Nic Endo have some copies and said it was "really cool". Something J has a handful of copies. Mycroft Holmes, etc... so I'm glad it's being enjoyed. I'm doing another one. Only one copy has been recorded though because I ran outta cassettes. heh but I shall finish recording the other 24 copies eventually.

Having finally worked out the logistics of it... I could potentially organise CBML3 in its entirety. Get the tracks together, organise the money thing, send it out... as long as I don't end up out of pocket. It could be done.

I think it would make sense for one person to have a handle on it all - less points of failure. That said, rather you than me (: but I'm well up for another round, so I'm here with cheerleading support. Whoop whoop! Go Mixomatosis go!
Anecdotally, I've heard that the cheapest way to press CDs or vinyl in Europe is via pressing plants in eastern europe, e.g. Poland. If we're doing this from the UK, that might make the most sense?

Actually, I know someone at a pressing plant who can get "mates rates". This is the same person who may well be able to master the CD in exchange for a track. Cheers for the info though. Got any links?
Given what's happened during the past 2 projects you may be wondering why I'm offering my services. Well...
1) I am determined not to get out of pocket with this. I still have some student loan left in case of an "emergency", but I will do everything in my power to ensure I don't lose a penny. 2) I've just finished my first year at uni, and thus have 4 months free. 3) I'm a nice man.

i'm excited about this --- i don't have to do any work! all i have to do is repeatedly say "what's happening?" "is it ready yet?" "HUH? Huh?!"
let's get started ---
