i was so sure i was going to get em in the mail yesterday... like some fucking tiny tim or charlie looking for a gold ticket moment... after running all the way home from work - i cried to see that they were not there. instead i found out my mother had been raped by a two ton silver back gorilla.

I am listening to the cd right this instint and i have got as far as that fucking awful "Shampoo my pants" song. You really let the side down putting that crap on it.

No 1 second clip thing at the end of my tracks so i am happy with that. I'm going to reserve further comment until i've hear the whole thing.

Yup, the DVD is there. If you're about tuesday night in Colchester then i'll see about bringing them with me.

I've heard the whole thing now and i have to say it's nothing like what i expected. It's more like The Ottoman Empire Mk. 2.

CBML2 is now up at Hallo Excentrico.

The physical CD will soon be available at V/Vm's shop and Norman Records.  You just might want one once you hear its sleazy goodness.

OK, now i've got a bit of time on my hands to write something a bit more detailed.

I listened to the disk with my tracks on first, even though it's now technically disk 2, and i have no problem with my own tracks at all - they sound fine.

I am suprised that the overall tone of the disk is so serious! This is not necessarily a bad thing, in fact i'd say i was pleasently suprised in the end, i was just expecting things to be a little more light hearted.

It's definitly closer in tone to "....Empire" than CBML 1. There are a couple of things, however, that i'm not too sure about.

- The typography inside the sleeve is pretty inconsistent.

- The artwork seems out of place now i've heard the album. Garish pink isn't a colour i'd have chosen for this set of songs.

- the Cats Against The Bomb track should have definitly been on the other disk or a lot later on in the tracklisting,  it sticks out like a sore thumb where it is at the moment.

Other than that, i'm pretty pleased with the whole thing really.

This is very UK specific, so if you're not in the UK this won't interest you.

Sales:
I will be taking as many copies as possible to Rough Trade in London as understand they do "Sale or Return".
I don't live in London, but I am able to moonlight on work trips there. Might give Sister Ray a go too. Does anyone know of anywhere else in London that might take it?

UK Promo:
Organ
Radio 1 "One Music"
Bizarre Magazine?

Can people please post where they have sent / are sending promos to so that we don't duplicate.
At the risk of sounding like a wanker, I think we need some generic release info for promos (obviously this is country specfific):

Eg

"CAN BUY ME LOVE VOLUME 2:
Label: Digital Vomit
Release Date: 15th May 06
Available from:
Norman Records
VVM Test Records"

well, the typography is one of my sore spots. i've already discussed at length the fact that this didn't turn out how i had wanted. the problem was that the text was changed dramatically about 3 times because of the printing problems in australia. by the time it was finished it no longer resembled the originally tracklisting i sent them.

the artwork was chosen and created before the album was even completed, so it was impossible to know what the tone of the CD would end up being.

the CATB track placement is entirely my fault. i think my biggest mistake was with how i sequenced that disc. i'm kinda pissed off at myself for how i did it, but again, there were a ton of variables that had to be dealt with that made sequencing this CD very difficult. i had to deal with time constraints, tracks showing up late/being edited later, tracks being added after i sequenced the CD, and an attempt to balance both discs somehow. i said earlier in an old thread that i had issues with disc 2 (now disc 1) and those issues were a direct result of my poor track sequencing. sorry, guys.

What's done is done. One of the problems with that CATB track compared to everything else is simply the fact that it's a live recording (not an especially high quality one either) amongst a whole album of digital manipulations and noise. I think, like my "Half A Brain" track, it would stick out for better or worse wherever it went.

The typography sucks, but at least it's clear enough to read.

As for the artwork, it's great but only really fits disk 2 (what was supposed to be disk 1) because of the sleazy bookend tracks. It doesn't work so well with with the other disk

Overall though, i'm happy and i think this could be the start of something as well. I'll have less qualms about these compilations in the future now i've heard the finished product.

it would have been cool to split the discs of the more dancey stuff and the noisey stuff... i don;t know what the dance to noise ratio is as i have yet to hear the discs (im not downloading it - on principle im waiting for the copies to show up)... but yeah....

as far consistency of music to pakcaging... the sleave looks fucking slick. and it don;t matter none if the music doesn't work out... cause it looks awesome.

on the typography side of things, could we not do an insert, an addendum we could all print out and put in, I think this would sort of work with the whole DIY nature of this thing

max -- i can't believe you haven't received yours yet. that sucks. i included 2 or 3 copies for Ilkae, i believe.

hooray -- that's an ok idea about an insert, but it still burns me that i put so much effort into making the typography just right only to have it be summarily destroyed. it's ABSOLUTELY NOT rank's fault. his portion of the art was done months before the screw-ups occurred. poor swerve at Dual Plover had to update the art like 3 times because the printing company destroyed the first batch of art and they had to have it re-printed at a different company (at a loss, even), and because toecutter added his song at the last possible second. literally.

and i had considered making a "dance" disc and an "ambient/noise/quiet" disc, but it would have made one disc great and the other dull as dirt, i think. i think any good cd should have peaks and valleys, with energy built up and moments of quiet interspersed at pleasing intervals....whether that happened or not is debatable.

in the end, if there's one thing i've learned from these comps it's this:

there will never be a finished product that pleases everybody. the last disc was (at times) considered a disaster, but in the end i think people grew to really enjoy it.

....and if there are 2 things i've learned, it's that mistakes will happen when dealing with this many people on this many different levels. it's unavoidable. in fact, it's really is a minor miracle that 40-some-odd people managed to pool together money and have a good product to show for it at the end of it all. just think about it --- this isn't something that has been done before, and that's because it's complete madness.

i hope they didn;t get lost or something... was it mailed through basic postal service? i can check to see if it came in and noone was home to sign off on it and then the slip thing they leave got taken or something... i don;t know... i just want to hold it, y'know? just in my arms a little - maybe kiss one, tease it playfully and then put it to bed... that's all.

I actually like the track sequence and wild diversity.  Had I sequenced it, I probably would have scattered the breakcore stuff a little thinner instead of having so much of it up front, but it is a good way to grab the listener's attention if they only have a passing acquaintance with this kind of music.  Having the Hooray track at the end was perfect, too.  I was kind of expecting another musical joke and instead got a very quiet and thoughful ambient track - it totally caught me off-guard and that was obviously the point.

Cool, thanks Keith. Just round the corner from the Foundry by the look of the map.

As for my track sticking out, well at least its distinctive, for better or for worse.

I will probably be in London on Wednesday, and there should be adequate skiving time to get at least one of the rough trades and smallfish done.

Well, I haven't seen the discs, so I can't comment on that. But I have been listening online to random tracks, and so far I'm impressed.

1) My tracks sound as good (or as bad) as I made them, no distortion, and as far as I can tell no second clipped off the end =

2) The sequencing seems great. The Cats Against The Bomb track for my money is actually in a pretty good place - it's got the beaty feel picked up from the track before and is early enough in the disc not to be a real clanger in terms of it being a live track on a digital disc.

3) Everyone's track I've listened to so far has been awesome! If anything, I'm disappointed mine sounds so normal compared to the best of the bunch...

Personally I'm going to use all my copies for friends and family, but if anyone wants to send out magazine or record shops copies I'd recommend:

Magazines:

Vice
The Wire (worth a shot?)
Terroriser (a metal mag I know, but they do like a bit of noise & breakcore from time to time)

Record shops in London:

Smallfish (Old Street)
Sister Ray (previously Selectadisc - Berwick Street, Soho)

and then shops that'll definitely take them (because they do second hand stuff and will buy anything):

Music and Record Exchange - there's one on Berwick Street, one in Camden, and a three or four in Notting Hill
Reckless Records (Berwick Street)

--------------------------------------------------------------
LONDON: i could do better than that

Funny, iivix, I felt the same way about my track - it seemed kind of ho-hum next to everyone else's stuff.  Maybe it's just that I've listened to mine so many times that it's old news to me now.  I actually consider your track one of the highlights, but for highly subjective and personal reasons.  Then again, isn't all enjoyment of music subjective and personal at the end of the day?

I will say that I was pleasantly surprised at how crisp and clean the mastering on my track was.  It was so sparse to begin with that I really didn't think much could be done to shine it up.  I made a note to Solypsis to pass on to Toecutter that the subsonic frequencies were intentional, and damn if he didn't manage to bring them out nicely.  (There is a 32-hertz spike in the bass drone - an attempt to create tension with psychoacoustic rather than traditional musical techniques.)

Glad you like the track Max!
I'll probably be in Soho on Wednesday, so I'll whore myself around those record shops and see how I get on. The artwork will be very appropriate for the area of the city!

I see that digitalvomit.com has been registered.
Who has this and do they want a webpage on it?

I'm putting something together right now.
