I've been playing around with mambo cms a bit as one of my clients old website is built on one and i needed to get my head round it. But it seems quite straight forward as in placing content etc, and they have shit loads of add ons like forums, blogs and skins that you can add to the site. You need a host that supports PHP to run it though.

Could solve all our problems ...

OK, as I see it, we have three ways of redeveloping the website:

Old school

This means one or more people hacking away at html code, as is currently done.

Pros:
- Could look really good if done right, and definitely the most bespoke approach.
- Offers most flexibility in the long run

Cons:
- Responsibility lies with one or two people to code pages, update content etc.
- Needs a fairly high degree of technical knowledge
- Easily breakable
- Needs it's own server space (I think), if we want proper digitalvomit.com URLs for bookmarks

...

CMS

A CMS is a Content Management System. This is an application that sits between the web layer and the content, and, once set up, allows non-technical users to manage the content, update pages, and add new pages and functionality, via a graphical user interface of some sort, rather than hacking at the code.

Pros
- Can get a slick site
- Easier to set up than coding html
- Easy for non-techies to update and manage
- Responsibility for content management can be delegated across a few people
- All sits on one site, including forums, blog etc. depending on CMS

Cons
- Software is free, but hosting is not, and we need php hosting for mambo (as above). Hosting isn't necessary expensive (in fact, we might get some for free - http://www.one.com/en_GB/), but it does require someone to set it up and organise it
- One person still needs to plan the site, and a techie still needs to do the initial set up

...

Web 2.0

As I proposed above, all we have for a centralised site is one homepage, which acts a portal to a load of stuff hosted elsewhere - blog on blogger, forum here, wiki at http://www.wikidot.com/ etc.

Pros
- Not a lot of technical knowledge required
- Entirely decentralised, no one person is responsible for anything
- Entirely ad hoc set up
- Totally free

Cons
- Could end up a complete mess
- Still needs a few people to take responsibility for initial set up of stuff, templates etc.
- Doesn't offer the same level of personalisation and brand development as the two options above - everything we do online would be part DigiVom, part aimoo/blogger/wikidot/myspace etc...

i vote for whatever methoid allows the most people to easily update the site. the centralized version we've been dealing with has not been updated enough (no jabs at mixo whatsoever).

a password system is obviously necessary, though. too many people updating could be disasterous. or fun. i dunno.

IMO, whoever wants to run with this should just run with it. act first, ask questions later. if anyone doesn't like it, then they shoulda done it themself.

It doesn't quite work like that though. If one person runs with a project without community consensus, then essentially they become the de facto owner of that project, and end up shouldering all the responsibility for it. If someone's happy to do that, then fine. If we want something like the responsibility for maintaining the website not to fall to just one person, then we have to get community engagement built into the structure of it from the start.

If i was designing something for Digital Vomit i think something simple is all that is needed to showcase everything done thus far and which gives credit to those who have co-ordinated releases such as Mixo and also talks about the 7" which never was etc.

Simple though, not too much text, just the main points because people don't want to read so much online. I think there are enough of you to make something good enough.

Something like this Freenoise site i did would be perfect. Just simple and to the point.

It needs to be updateable by a few people. As giving the responsibility to one person is no good when that person is too busy.

The site now is fine because it's simple, it's just the information which is a problem as there is not enough there and there have only been updates to content when there is a new release also people will buy more if things look a little slicker.

The key is to not overdo the site. It needs the DIY look but just needs padding out with more content and a little more information.
Simple constant design is the best, something easy on the eyes.

For an example of a great blog check out one of my friends blogs here

Now you can see there is an about section there and also daily updates to links etc. Of course you can pad these out with text with the links. But i love the simplicity of his site. He has a download section (MUSIC) also and this would be easy to set up and for people to maintain.

Anyway it's all about ideas and of course no-one is criticising anyone for the current site, it's just that now there is no release to sort out energy should go into promoting what has gone before and what is still to come ......

i certainly don't want to saddle any one person with the responsibility, i just mean that whoever has the means of starting this thing -- please do, and let the rest of us run with it.

if i understood the technical ins-and-outs of all this perhaps i wouldn't be so hasty to say "just do it!"

anyways === i just don't want this to be another sound-and-fury discussion with no end result, that's all.

i'll do whatever is requested of me, BTW, as long as it isn't tech stuff.

I like the ideas that involve decentralization simply because it's an extension of how we do everything else.  It should not be so easy that it is tempting to Joe Blow whose idea of fun is starting shit, but easy enough that anyone who really wanted to could without a lot of obscure skills.  I think, through trial and error, we have found a way to do just that in the physical world, so why not the cyber-world as well, if it's so unusual and all?

This all reminds me that I need to look up exactly what all my server will handle.

Personally, I think the Web 2.0 idea suggested by iivix sounds like the way forward - the fact that nobody else has done it before makes it even more attractive. It might require some effort to set up but we can fine-tune the thing as we proceed and we could include some form of control (password/moderation) to stop the whole thing descending into chaos.

I've got some web design skills, so I'd be happy to help at that level, although my knowledge of server side stuff is pretty poor.

I'll do whatever I can to help but I really have no knowledge of HTML or PHP, though I am semi-literate and excitable.

According to a friend of mine who is a systems administrator, a Linux web server will indeed support PHP.  So we can indeed move the forum to Hallo Excentrico! if I don't lose the account (see thread "Everything Else"\"Ah sheeit...").

OK, I am running with this, as Solypsis suggests... I'm playing with the Web 2.0 approach, with the DigiVom homepage simply being a one page portal to all the other collaborative stuff.

It's going to have four parts, to expand to five in future.

Homepage (one page html - I'll make this)

Blog - this is for news about releases, gig news and reviews, promotional content, links to downloads, links to reviews, etc. (not general discussion please! Just stuff relating to the record label and artists on the label, and perhaps occasionally honourable mention links to other music).

It's here, ready to go. All I've done so far is register the URL, and chosen a really simple blank template. Basically, everyone and anyone involved with Digital Vomit should become an author, and then basically post whatever you think relevant as and when you want to. To become an author, please email me at hirekatsu [at] gmail dot com asap, I'll invite you to join and you can get posting.

Wiki - this is for release info, artist biogs and info about the label itself. It's going to be a wiki, so everyone will be able to add info, edit pages etc. I've registered this now, and am playing with the web application, but it looks like it's going to be really easy for us all to use. If you email me to become a blog author, I'll also invite you to the wiki. I've just to got to do a bit of set-up stuff and it'll be good to go.

Forum - this where we get involved, and make stuff happen! i.e. here. (: Well, we all know aimoo is a bit pants, but the wiki site has some forum functionality, so we should play with that and see if we're going to swap in the long run.

Mail order - this is where people buy stuff... Right, bit stuck on how this will work for now, but in the short term we should link to local people who'll sort out mail orders... Longer term we should look at making some sort of shop interface where people can buy and pay online (then work out how that order gets fulfilled behind the scenes). Let's sort this out in a bit I reckon.

No that I complain, easier for me but still weird.

To be honest, I have no idea how it all works really - I just set it up, and hopefully we can all mess about until we can work it out (:

Reply to Mixomatosis (10/18/2007 1:09 AM) Incidentally, I've got two albums by Ospa Sephaneu to upload as soon as I get my hands on a minidisc player. I think these are likely to be: DVR021.1 - Ospa Sephaneu - Cuck My SockDVR021.2 - Ospa Sephaneu - Cuck My Sock (Come Again?) ...unless I've got my codes mixed up. Also, I think hardoff's Inter-vom thing needs a code. But that's for another thread... EDIT: plus I want to try and convince local hippy transvestite Bernie Sizzey to produce some copies of his 19-disc box-set for the label. AFAIK there are only two copies in circulation currently, and I own one of them. There is audio here that needs to be heard.hello miximitosis little hippy bernie here .glad u liked music my email address is bsizzey@hotmail.co.uk
